This is 3rd in a series, following The Damage Done and The Next One To Fall, featuring Lily Moore, a travel journalist.Lily is offered the chance to travel to Acapulco, to write a piece on one of the local hotels. The hotel, once the place where the elite used to go to for sun, sand and tropical drinks, is now like a ghost-town. No guests, empty rooms, little staff, and armed guards disturbs her.... especially when she finds the hotel is owned by her ex-boyfriend, but is being run by his second in command.
While there, she runs into another journalist who says she has a lead into a story that will take down the hotelier, and wants Lily to help her. Then she disappears, only to be found murdered a day later. Then Lily finds she is actually being held against her will and not allowed to leave.
I've enjoyed the series. Lily has what I'd call a fun job ... traveling around the globe, staying in exotic hotels, and being paid to write about her experiences. She's a strong woman, dealing with a few issues, and half in love with a tattooed cop.
The characters are well done ... some are quirky, like her best friend; some are sneaky like the woman who makes all the arrangements, and some are just downright evil.
I would recommend, as usual, to start with Book One in the series.

I grew tired of keeping up with the suspects, motives and red herrings. It went on and on and just wasn't for me.
The Lily Moore character, her decisions, etc, are so self absorbed and annoying. She is a character who is not developing into a more interesting person but retreating into the mind of a two year old; ie, the world revolves around me. She is not even a good friend to her bff. I understand her character in the first book of the series, can make excuses for the second book, and in this, the third, ugh!
The third book in a series that keeps gettign better. Good plot turns, great location descriptions and deep characters make this a good read.
I made it through 40% of this book because I just refused to give up, but I couldn't take it any more. Absolutely nothing happened in 40%. The lead character spent 40% of this book looking for her friend, talking about looking for her friend, wondering why she should look for her friend. I just couldn't take it anymore. I kept wondering when something was going to happen. I will not read this author again. I now have started Second Honeymoon and it is good and something is happening. Thank goodness.
Hilary Davidson's heroine, Lily, is a travel writer, and each of these mysteries is imbued with a strong sense of place. Evil in All It's Disguises is set in a decaying, formerly glamourous hotel in Acapulco. I felt as though I were right there with Lily, in danger myself. I can't wait for Lily's next adventure.
Davidson pays homage to the locked-room mysteries of Poe, the whodunits of Agatha Christie, and she knows the ins and outs of complex character and story arc, but what really drives her work, the element that has been present in all three books but is most gloriously on display here is the mood she conjures through her profound appreciation for the very best of Hollywood. The Golden Age. Film Noir. New Hollywood. Whatever your preference, whatever you want to call it, it's the timeless appeal. That is the beauty of cinema. I've read recent interviews where Hilary talks about some of her influences in writing this book, and it's no surprise that she mentions specific films and actors as much as she does other writers. (It's also no surprise when she says Ava Gardner served as the basis for Lily Moore. Even before these interviews, I imagined Ava whenever I thought of Lily.) Whether it's Jean Harlow or Cary Grant or Humphrey Bogart -- or even a modern star like Ed Harris, who I believe I read was the inspiration for Lily's love interest, the roughhewn but tenderhearted Bruxton -- the silver screen features prominently throughout Evil.
Evil in All Its Disguises has the added pressure of not only upping the ante and raising the bar of the two preceding books, both of which were sensational, but also wrapping up a trilogy in a way that brings closure to all these characters, whose lives and loves we've been following and invested in for thousands of pages. I am pleased to say that Hilary Davidson succeeds, handily, on all accounts.
In EVIL IN ALL ITS DISGUISES, Hilary Davidson demonstrates yet again she's the master of the Hitchcockian thriller. As in her prior stellar outings, this novel is informed by a gorgeous sense of place -- in this case, the fictitious and decidedly creepy Hotel Cerón. Its faded opulence, armed guards, and empty hallways serve as a funhouse reflection of the Acapulco of old. Once Hollywood's playground, it's long been passed over by international tourists on account of rampant crime and endemic corruption. Which makes travel-writer Lily Moore's swanky all-expenses-paid press junket seem suspicious, to say the least.
Someone should have told her if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. But then, she had no idea how many lives would be put at risk by her seemingly innocuous desire for a little sun and sand.
Davidson sets an uneasy tone early, and ratchets up the tension in the ensuing pages until it's almost too much to take. She uses the vulnerability of international travelers to great effect, and her ability to conjure claustrophobia from so seemingly luxurious a setting is nothing short of masterful. Add to that an engrossing, emotionally resonant mystery and no small measure of catharsis for Lily and the supporting cast we've come to love these past three books, and it's no wonder this series is one of the most buzzed-about in all of crime-fic.
