I found this book a chore to read. Really, who cares about how untamable Desiree's hair is on a humid day or how fat she is and why she won't exercise? She also is unable to tell the slime who screwed her over for another woman that she can't represent him! This woman is a doormat and hardly an example to good/fun PI novels. I figured out the killer on page 92-3 as soon as they were talking about Regis & Kathie Lee and plodded through the rest to see how Eichler would resolve this story. It's definitely not a good one, but as I am working my way through the series, I find that most of these novels have been in the 2-3 star range.
I'm not sure if this is my 5th or 6th Desiree Shapiro book in this series, but I do know from the first page on I'm hooked. This marvelous author brings me right into the thick of it everytime. I am right at home with Desiree and her immediate circle, Jackie, her secretary, Ellen, her niece and of course Desiree's current dating companion-Al Bonaventure.
In this case, Desiree's help is requested by an old flame who was not so nice. As a matter of fact he was a downright cad to say the least. It appears that Bruce Simon's (the old flame) wife, Cheryl, died under mysterious circumstances. Was being killed by an oncoming subway a mis-step or was she pushed? And if she was pushed, as Bruce suspects, who did it and why?

The characters in the Desiree Shapiro series have believable interactions and relationships. Desiree has a fun sense of humor that keeps me on track as the reader. Thankfully, the author, Selma Eichler,has just the right amount of situations going on concurrently with the plot. she never overwhelms the reader with nonsense.
Loved this book, couldn't put it down and love this series.

Highly recommended to all cozy lovers.

About this particular book Desiree is hired by her ex-guy friend to investigate the death of his wife. Everybody thinks Desiree is crazy to accept the job. But she does a good, thorough job of investigating Cheryl's death. Was Cheryl purposely pushed under the subway train, or was it an honest accident? Cheryl was a flight attendant, so Desiree has other flight attendants and pilots to talk to. And is Cheryl's husband (Desiree's ex-guy friend) being totally honest when telling Desiree what he knows?

About this particular series Desiree is a private detective in NYC with a wacky and fun sense of humor and a cozy life. She lives by herself (she is widowed, with no children); has a niece, Ellen, whom she adores; she has good friends, including her secretary Jackie, her next-door neighbor, and others. I enjoy hearing about what she eats, and her fun excursions to eateries.

I've heard certain reviewers complain about "what's the chances of THAT many murders happening in such a small town and ALL of them being discovered by ONE person? The population in that town must be about 5 people now." It isn't realistic, but those type of books are still fun to read, and to me, that's all that matters. HOWEVER

If you feel that way, then this series might be for you. Because Desiree does not FIND bodies; she is a private detective, hired to investigate the situations AFTER somebody else finds them. And she lives in NYC (not a small town), so you never have to worry about the deaths in her investigations putting a dent in the population!

This series is fun, witty, wacky, and downright cozy. I love Desiree and I enjoy reading these books.
I enjoy the Desiree books. They could not be confused with great literature, but the character is endearing. The fact that every single detail of her day is described allows the reader to feel a closeness that makes this series of books fun to follow. Also everybody loves to see a mystery solved.
This is a great book and fits well into the series. I love Desiree, who is very down to earth and real.
Haven't gotten it read yet, but if is as good a the ones I have read will be enjoyed for years to come.
