Though this is an oversized book, its relatively meager page count of 272 and the huge number of illustrations is misleading. Don't be fooled. This isn't for casual reading. 'The Anglo-Saxons by James Campbell is pleasantly verbose with a surprising amount of text-based information. It is essentially a collection of short essays by different experts on particular topics, with the main text edited by Mr. Campbell. The amount of actual text seems equivalent to a trade sized paperback of over 400 pages. Many excellent photographs, maps and illustrations, including some full-color, full-page plates. It is straightforward, linear, and well organized. It would be helpful to already have a historical perspective on the subject matter. Lots of names, lots of dates, lots of speculation and theories. The AngloSaxons James Campbell Eric John Patrick Wormald 8601300094724 Books Reviews
This well-illustrated volume provides an excellent introduction to the Anglo-Saxon period. The "picture essays" regarding coinage and other specialized topics help provide detail without interrupting what amounts to historic narrative.
The problems of using source documents are detailed as well as the triumphs of modern archealogy in expanding our understanding of this period of history.
The photographs, drawings, and maps compliment and support the text nicely.
Highly recommended as an introduction to the period and its people.
If learning about the 'lost' centuries of the Anglo-Saxons is your thing, then this book is a must read. Beautifully illustrated, peppered with excellent essays on particular subjects of interest (such as the dating of the coins found during that era) and thoroughly researched, this book gives the intelligent and well-informed layman a satisfying peek into the ancient past. It will also serve as an excellent resource for more serious scholars. College age and up.
I think that this book is useful to anyone studying Anglo-Saxon topics. It covers the basic context of the development of Anglo-Saxon England after the fall of Roman Britain through the Battle of Hastings. It provides a fairly good account, in broad generalist terms, of this period in history.
This book is primarily a history and as such needs to be seen as such. It is not a deep look at Anglo-Saxon social structures, nor it is a look at Anglo-Saxon ethical culture. However it covers material culture in relative detail as well as what is known about the historical movements, consolidations of power, and the like.
The illustrations and photographs in this book are extremely interesting and well organized. Even if the text wasn't great (which it is), the photos would have made the text worth it. I would recommend this work.
Excellent info on the Angels and the Saxons. Maps showing settlements and other pertinent locations, many black and white pictures and many beautiful color photos. There is a full page picture of a helmet found in the Sutton Hoo excavation believed to have belonged to the great Saxon King Redwald. This picture alone is worth the price of the book, as far as I am concerned. However, You will find much more on the Sutton Hoo excavation which is one of the most exciting excavations I have read about.
Chapter 1 of the book gives info on the end of the Roman era. Then in Chapter 2 the authors give you a rundown of the Germanic peoples who invaded England who were mainly the Saxons, Angles and some Jutes. This is a comprehensive book about how England became England and if you have any interest at all in England you should love this book, and if you can look at the picture of the Sutton Hoo Helmet and not want to hang it on your wall I would not believe it. Just please don't tear it out of the book. I copied mine and it is good as the pic in the book and it will go on my wall.
Very informative which I enjoyed, but there are to many “pictorial essays”. I did not care for the “picture book” foremat of this book, but that is the fault of the publisher not the writers/editors of this work.
This is my first book on Anglo Saxon history. To say that I am pleased is an understatement. All three contributing authors did an excellent job. This is not light reading but then I didn’t want it to be. Completely worth a five star rating. And by the way his “Anglo Saxon State” is a one star at best.
This book co-written by three authors does an excellent job of describing the history of the Anglo-Saxons in England. With maps and pictures, and detailed references from writers from that time period, I believe it is the most complete book available on the subject.
Though this is an oversized book, its relatively meager page count of 272 and the huge number of illustrations is misleading. Don't be fooled. This isn't for casual reading.
