Butterfly Season D J Brown Books Reviews

I'm really glad I didn't start reading until I had some uninterrupted reading time because I couldn't put it down! "Absorbing" is the word I'm looking for, I think. An excellent read.
I've never done a book review before, so not sure what to say. Butterfly Season is definitely a book that jerks at your heartstrings. The writer did a great job of making the characters seem real. It engages you in the story so much that you really feel like you are there. A very good read. I'd highly recommend this book.
Ms. Brown has taken that old writer's adage, "write what you know", and delightfully smashed it all to hell. In a bold, confident and risky move that flies in the face of prevalent modern author narcissism (a white male writer has a white male protagonist, an Asian female writer has an Asian female protagonist, etc.), this author has written a novel peopled with characters caught in a time and place and culture that she can have no personal experience with, and has done so in a manner that must be labeled astoundingly successful. Add brilliant writing technique to an engaging story and the end product is storytelling at its finest - and that's exactly what Butterfly Season is. You won't want to put it down.

I just finished this book and I have to say I was literally blown away. Since I have "limited" time because of working two jobs...I very carefully choose the books that I purchase to read. This book's title is what originally caught my eye...but upon reading the little blurb on the back...I decided to purchase it. I was not disappointed in the least in the book. The storyline is one that grabs you from the beginning and just keeps you turning pages. I thank goodness that I had two days off....because I started the book one day and finished it the second. The author has a wonderful way of making you feel as though you are sitting right next to the characters. She's vivid in her descriptions of the characters and it makes you really feel a part of their story. I certainly look forward to further books by this author as she's a fantastic story teller. Be sure to purchase this book and read it...you will not be disappointed!
I read primarily non-fiction because fiction rarely seems to keep my interest. That wasn't the case at all in Butterfly Season. From the very first page right through till the very end this book was quite addicting and very hard to put down.

I've read other books relative to America's birth-defect of slavery and they're usually very painful for me to get through given the extreme nature of prejudice, violence, and brutality towards slaves. One thing that makes reading such content so painful to me is the author's writing ability being so great that it influences and provokes my imagination to the point where I feel as if I'm physically right there in the storyline. That's exactly what happened while I read through this book and I salute DJ Brown for being such a success in her writing ability alone.

But the book wasn't all tragic though as it demonstrate how a man can be socialized with the hatred of prejudice and then overtime evolves to love those he was taught to hate. I think there are many people throughout the country that can relate to this. The book also demonstrates the love and commitment between people who love and support each other through life's infinite crises, and the value in prayer and leaning on God.

This was one of those books where I become quite emotional attachments to its characters. Towards the end I knew, obviously, that the book was going to end, but I really didn't want it to. I grew to love many of them and just like I do with many TV Shows that eventually come to and end, I felt both happy and sad as I read the last few words; I didn't want to say goodbye! Again, demonstrates to me Brown's success as a writer and storyteller.

I give this book a 5 star rating, two thumbs up, and a great notion of appreciation to its author, and I absolutely look forward to reading it again some day D
I could not put this book down and I normally take a really long time to read a book. I love the double-spaced pages with easy-to-read font. The story just kept pulling me in and the author did a great job of making the characters come to life. Good verses evil on every page. Loved this book!
I finished this books days ago, but the story is still swirling around in my head. The words come alive and you feel as if you are there.
An excellent read! Grabs your interest from the very 1st page and you feel as if you're living with these folks and feeling their joys & sorrows. Compelling writing to say the least. I strongly recommend others buy this book. I promise you won't be disappointed at all.
